The online workshops offer teachers an opportunity to explore topics to deepen their professional knowledge and skills in a personalised way (in their own time, pace and place). The EDB awards accredited professional development (PD) hours for participation in online workshops, which can contribute to teachers’ PD requirements. Storytelling in PDNETwork Of the 38 current online workshops, a number of these support teachers to broaden their knowledge and skills for teaching storytelling.The workshops listed below can assist in developing teaching strategies for storytelling and also promote reading, writing, speaking and listening in English. Drama in the Classroom This workshop offers teachers practical information on how to bring drama into the mainstream English language classroom.This includes exploring process drama activities through various storytelling techniques and how to run an effective readers’ theatre activity. Filmmaking in the English Classroom This workshop offers an overview for creating films and developing 21 st century skills. It explores the rationale and practical strategies that support storytelling through film.This includes story structure and using functional and instructional language to create storyboards before scripting a story. Filmmaking skills are then explored, including editing software and technical tips. Language Arts Inc. This workshop outlines the benefits of incorporating language arts activities into the learning of English.The teaching of poetry, song and comic narrative is explored through vocal techniques; narrative interpretation to convey meaning with enthusiasm and confidence; and audience awareness through relevant gestures and facial expressions, and more. Navigating the World of Digital Books Want to find a great online library to inspire storytelling in the classroom? Epic School is one such source, offering 20,000+ books, audiobooks and learning videos free to schools.This workshop is a step-by-step tutorial on how to plan and use Epic School . Teaching Strategies for Reading Start your students’ storytelling journey by enhancing your own storytelling skills.This workshop explores a range of teaching strategies for reading (storytelling, reading aloud and more), with advice on book choice and teaching tips, to develop an effective reading programme. Vocabulary Building This workshop focuses on the building of vocabulary for long-term retention and how to choose and design resources, strategies and activities. Multiple teaching ideas and resources are explored.The ‘Explicit Teaching Strategies’ section includes storytelling modelled with the ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ video, which perfectly demonstrates the use of vocabulary for storytelling! Each year, the NET Section recognises the participation of teachers and the support of school leaders through the ‘PDNETwork Awards’.These awards commend schools with the highest number of completed workshops and the teachers with the highest number of completed workshops in each school year (from 1 July to 30 June). Thank you to 8,800 teachers who have engaged with the PDNETwork platform.Thank you also to the many teachers who completed online evaluation forms so that platform topics and content can be enhanced to ensure your professional needs are met.The 2023/24 winners are listed below.
